Gigabit speeds with Realtek RTL8169

Avi's picture

A big mystery... I never managed to get over ~14Mb/sec with Samba transfers even with jumbo frames of MTU=7168 (that's the max. of the chipset). Well, that's above the 8-9Mb/sec you usually get with 100Mbps cards, but not quite a gigabit speed.

Let's troubleshoot:

  • To begin with, get the latest driver.
  • Set the MTU to 7168. To do that in Fedora, edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth2 (my adapter is called eth2; replace the right name in your configuration) and add or modify the line: MTU=7168.
